Sustainability elective & curriculum-based sustainability initiatives
Sustainability Elective
Sustainability is an elective subject for students in Years 9 and 10. There are both practical and theory components, with students learning the ins and outs of organic agriculture along with sustainability issues concerning transport, consumption, energy and waste.
Year 7 Stewardship unit
All Year 7 students complete the Stewardship unit as part of their Religious Education subject. Students learn about what it means to be a steward of the Earth, how to contribute to sustainability projects and programs at Merici, and how to live more sustainably in their lives outside school.
Year 8 Sustainability Christian Service
All students at Merici complete Christian Service hours as part of the College’s service learning program. In Year 8, this is incorporated into their Religious Education classes in Term 4. Year 8 students conduct community service that benefits the environment, including helping at the Canberra Environment Centre, and helping in the gardens at local churches and community organisations.
Year 7 Integrated Humanities and the ACT Parliament of Youth on Sustainability
Each year, Merici participates in the ACT’s Parliament of Youth on Sustainability, sending a variety of students with different proposals for making Canberra a more sustainable place. This is incorporated into the curriculum in Year 7 Integrated Humanities, in which students learn about Civics and Citizenship and the democratic process.
