IB Language Policy
Language is integral to enhancing students’ skills in cross-cultural communication. Merici College is an internationally-minded school, where students acquire a wider-world view through the understanding and appreciation of other cultures as well as their own culture. The Merici College Language philosophy is also underpinned by The Catholic Education K-12 Position Paper English as an Additional Language or Dialect.
Healthy Eating and Drinking Policy
Merici College strives to be a place where children are nurtured and nourished at every level – emotionally, spiritually, socially, academically and physically. This means that the food offered to the children through the school community needs to be nutritious, nourishing and sustaining. Schools are in a unique position to reinforce and send powerful healthy eating messages to children that will assist them in making positive lifestyle choices. As Merici College moves towards a healthier environment for our students and strives to be more sustainable in our practices, we need to set an example with all catering whether it is for staff, parents or students.
Drafts – Student Assessment
The purpose of the Drafts Policy is to clarify the expectations for/on staff regarding the reading of drafts of student work, while aiming to improve Year 10-12 student outcomes by allowing students to submit a draft of assessment.
Communication and Use of Mobile Phones
Mobile phones and technology are now a key part of modern life. Most students own a mobile phone with access to the internet and for safety reasons students will carry a mobile phone to contact home after or before school. However, mobile phones can and often do lead to several problems in school such as bullying, filming, disruption to lessons and inappropriate usage of the internet and social media leading to potential safeguarding issues.
Here at the Merici, we strongly encourage our students to develop socially and emotionally. This development is just as important as any academic progress or grades. Improving social skills and emotional development can best be done by talking to each other, interacting and developing real connections at break and lunchtime, as opposed to using their mobile phones.
Communication
Effective communication is essential in our environment. Many avenues exist to facilitate communication within the College and with the community. This policy covers formal processes of communication and sets out expectations to ensure positive and effective communication in the college community. This policy includes communication processes between members of staff, students, parents, and the wider community and outside agencies.
